In loving memory of Eugene “Gene” Phillip Mohler

by admin on December 22, 2016

Calla lily picEugene (Gene) Phillip Mohler was born on November 21, 1953 in Lansing, Michigan to Virgil and Stephanie (Herschel) Mohler.  After quite a battle with cancer he went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 20th.  Gene was the third of four brothers. He lived in Lansing through his adolescent years until moving to the Detroit area for high school then to Grayling, Michigan for his senior year.  While he was not as excited about moving to the “boonies” as he called it, he soon came to love northern Michigan.

Gene’s early career took him back to Lansing where he met and married Diane Disbro of Adrian, Michigan in 1980.  In 1981 they had an opportunity to move back to northern Michigan for Gene to work in the oil field.  Within a year he became employed with the Amoco Oil Company (BP), and moved to Gaylord, Michigan.

Shortly after, Gene went back to school to finish his degree in business, while also working on completing a petroleum technology program.  During this time he and Diane were blessed with three children, Jenna, Michael and Danae, who were the pride of his life.  He was a devoted husband, father, son, brother, and provider; taking care of his family was a top priority. Gene was a family man through and through. He loved to spend time with his family and was very involved in his children’s life.

Gene loved to camp. He and Diane would often spend time in their younger years with other couples out camping in the woods. In his spare time, he loved to take family vacations in their motorhome, go fishing with family and friends, and take trips back to Michigan to go snowmobiling (for those of you from Louisiana, you probably have no idea what this is!). Gene had a strong passion for figuring out how things worked and enjoyed muscle cars, especially old corvettes.  He was fascinated with cars from a very early age and working on his antique corvette was a labor of love. He was always grateful for an opportunity to talk about old cars and share pictures of all his former cars from his younger years.

In 1997, he was provided the opportunity to transfer to Louisiana with his company.  This was a difficult decision for him and definitely a transition, however, Gene loved challenges and meeting new people.  He quickly developed friendships and respect of his new co-workers taking on additional responsibilities as needed. Gene was a hard worker and always serious about making sure everyone was safe. However, he took advantage of opportunities to lighten the mood with his quick wit or an occasional prank.

Gene loved sharing his knowledge of cars and all things mechanical.  He was happiest when he could help someone in need or finish a project no matter the importance. He was involved in several fund raising efforts for St. Jude’s Childrens Hospital and loved to give back to the community.

Gene is survived by this wife, Diane (Disbro), children Jenna and spouse Chris Wilcox and grandson Isaiah Wilcox of Walker, Michael Mohler of Zachary, and Danae Mohler of Zachary; step-mother Marilyn Mohler of Kalkaska, Michigan, brothers Ken Mohler of Kalkaska,Steve Mohler and spouse Sheri of Anchorage, Alaska, and Alan Mohler of Okemos, Michigan.

Diane, We are so sorry for your loss. I couldn’t believe what I was reading. It must be close to 30 years since we’ve seen you. I’ve often thought of Gene, his sense of humor and his love of cars. We had a lot of fun in high school when he lived in Ferndale. I’ll never forget him.

Deepest regrets,
Doug
